Charudatta had all the chances to persue Vasantasena's chest of jewels that was left back in his custody. In his poverty that would have been the most natural thing to do. However, Charudatta asked maitreya to return the chest or box to its true owner the very next morning. Although maitreya was against the idea that advised Charudatta that he should make good usage of the resources given that Vasantasena was in love with him and had enough wealth already to mind a portion of it being used by her lover, yet Charudatta insisted that penury was better than living on other's generosity and returned it promptly. This is how Vasantasena come to know of Charudatta's generosity early in the play, in the second Act itself.
