Vasantasena uses her box of jewels as a pretext to restore communication with her lover. Towards the end of the first act of the play, Vasantasena enters Charudatta's house, pursued by Sansthanaka- the king's kinsman, and blows out the candle with her bellowing dress to fool the pursuant. In the darkness, Charudatta mistakes her as Madanika, his servant. However, Vasantasena soon reveals herself as she truly is, and entrusts him wit her box of jewels stating that it would be unsafe for her to carry back the jewels stating in the dark of the night, stating that it was because of the jewels that the ruffians chased her suppressing the fact that she was being pursued by Sansthanaka for her favour of love. However, the trick was cleverly played out, since bringing it back would give her another pretext to present herself in the presence of Charudatta in whose love she was smitten.
